Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My first grade students are dual language learners who are enthusiastic, energetic and love to learn!! Our school is an inner city bilingual school with a goal of graduating students who are fluent in both Spanish and English.
These wonderful first graders learn to read, write, speak and listen in not just one, but TWO languages!!
While my students spend most of their day hearing and learning in Spanish, their faces light up when I come to their classroom with my English story books, activities and learning centers. These provide my students opportunities to practice their English skills in a fun and interactive manner.
My Project
My first grade English Language Learners love to be read to. It is one of their favorite times of the day! They especially enjoy hearing stories more than once and then being able to retell that story using their English speaking and writing skills. These books will be used as Read Aloud stories to help my students with their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.
Books allow children to experience new adventures, make connections to others and learn new lessons everyday.
My students can practice all of their English skills by listening to, reading, writing and speaking about stories in English. Many of these books are by the same author or by authors of books already in our library. This is so we can use the books to continue our author studies. Books by the same author with the same characters and story structure give my students familiarity and the confidence they need to speak, write and read more in English. Some of these books also teach important lessons and social skills that most students need gentle reminders about. Reading stories about important social skills will help my students make connections with the world and the people around them.
