My Students

Can 3rd grade students write and illustrate self created books? They sure can!! A future Hemingway, Twain, or Seuss may be sitting in my classroom.

I teach a class of third grade gifted/high achieving students in a large urban school district.

Our school is in a low socioeconomic area of the city. We are a Title 1 school meaning that most students qualify for free or reduced lunch subsidized by the federal government. Many students are dropped off at school around 7:30 am and some aren't picked up until 6 pm.

My Project

How will staples, pencils, colored pencils ,pencil sharpener, and batteries enhance learning in my classroom? These resources are tools that authors need and use to write books. For this project, my students will create student authored books. Pencils are always needed in the classroom and the sharpener keeps them sharp. Writers go through many pencils in the creative process. The staples are to be used in the heavy duty stapler to staple the books. Batteries are for our portable word processors that the students use at their desks to draft their stories. Then they use the class computer to edit and print their work. Colored pencils are for the illustrating of the book. The students will learn the creative process author/illustrators go through in the creative process of writing a book. They will go step by step in a decision making process of an author. They will also practice writing skills to improve their writing which is a major part of the Common Core State Standards.

The donations for this project will improve my class because students take pride in publishing their work in a formal way.

The books written are shared with their classmates and students in other classes. The students become aware of the process authors go through and hopefully they will appreciate books more than ever.
