Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach math in a middle school in the Tremont section of the Bronx and have been working with a student since I began teaching and he was in the 7th grade. I still work with him and he now has earned an opportunity to participate in the Down Under Sports Games, an eleven-day international cultural exchange and cross country competition in Australia. The event is organized by the International Sports Specialist Inc and will take place July 18th -29th 2004. I would like to help him get there. For two years Juan has run indoor, outdoor and cross country for A. Philip Randolph High School here in NYC. During this time has maintained an 85 GPA, served as captain of the chess team, and participates in a youth leadership program in Harlem. Juan has overcome tremendous academic and personal adversity in the years I have known him and this is why I have taken a personal interest in making this once in a life time opportunity happen for him. Participating in such an event Juan stands to gain a deeper understanding for the world beyond Harlem and the Domincan Republic. He can gain a wealth of knowledge from the friendships he will make and ultimately cultivate with his international challengers and local guides. This he will certainly then bring back to his community and share with those that surround at home and at school. Currently, Juan is unable to participate in the Australian competition because he must come up with the money for the trip himself. He comes from a single parent home and his mother is struggling to pay for tuition of Juan's brother's first year of college. Juan is currently selling raffle tickets to win a two-way all expense paid tickets to Australia, as well as tutoring (he is very good in math and creative writing). Despite his fundraising efforts he has a long way to go. Together we have contacted local businesses, radio stations and some private corporations. His other teachers and I are also planning an auction to raise more of the funds. We have raised $2,400 and would like to ask a sponsor to donate either part of or all of the remaining balance. I am looking to the Donors Choose Network to see if someone might be looking to directly sponsor a student. The price includes his airfare and hotel as well as tournament registration fees, meals, and team building and cultural enrichment tours and trips planned for all participants. Upon return Juan has committed to give a presentation to different classes and those who have made his trip possible about his experiences in Australia. I do hope that you will be able to help.
