My Project

I teach 3 sections of 6th grade ELA. One of the best aspects of our reading curriculum is the focus on book clubs. Book clubs are a great motivator for kids and adults alike. Having someone to talk to about a book keeps readers engaged. Clubs work collaboratively to set goals and pace their own reading - a little social pressure goes a long way toward ensuring even the most reluctant kids do their reading homework!

While some kids thrive during these units, others struggle to keep up.

Students with learning disabilities and students who struggle with focus and attention often fall behind their peers during book clubs.

This year, we used a set of Playaway Audio books borrowed from the Brooklyn Public Library in conjunction with paper copies of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan during the Fantasy Book Clubs unit. It was a total game changer! Students who have struggled to finish a book all year were suddenly reading attentively for 45 minutes at a time. The audio support allowed students who read at different levels to participate in the same club. Several students who are typically only successful reading in graphic novels were able to complete a 300 + page fantasy novel for the first time - a huge accomplishment!

I'd love to integrate more of these valuable resources into our book club units so more students can take advantage of the audio supports Playaway technology provides. Unfortunately, the public library's supply of these sets is limited. That's where you come in!
