My Students

I work at an alternative high school in New York City where we strive to create a nurturing environment for non-traditional students whose needs haven't been met at other high schools. That means recognizing student strengths and talents, listening to their concerns and ideas, and providing them with a voice to promote lasting change.

Students deserve the opportunity to share their stories and turn those stories into actions that strengthen the community.

After all, it is the youth who are directly impacted by our society's challenges who have the creativity and the drive to imagine solutions.

Despite their drive and imagination, our students often struggle with literacy. So I've committed to support them in building on those foundational skills that will help them to become passionate readers and strong writers, able to think critically and communicate those thoughts to a wide audience.

My Project

Teaching is definitely my calling, but there is so much more that I must learn about being an effective and responsive English teacher. The National Council of Teachers of English holds a conference each year to support teachers to develop their craft.

Not only does the conference help teachers expand their toolset and strengthen their practice, it also helps them to create a vision for what education can and should look like.

I hope to gain insight at this conference about how to support my students who really struggle with literacy but also challenge them to think critically about complex texts.

I want to learn how to use media and technology to engage students with special needs. I want to learn how to lead classroom inquiry discussions addressing social justice issues and current events. I want to collaborate with teachers from all over the country, make connections, and brainstorm ways in which our students can connect with and learn from one another. The NCTE Conference can help me to make all of that possible. It is a powerful force for educators with passion. I always strive to be a better teacher for my students because its what they deserve. Your support we definitely help me along that path.
