Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a low-income section of New York in a Title 1 high school (over 95% of students on free/reduced lunch). My students are a combination of motivated 10, 11, and 12th graders that range from the high-achieving students to students who receive Special Education and ESL services. Equity in AP class enrollment ensures that each one of our students will be exposed to, and successful in, at least one AP level class in their high school experience.

We are committed to providing AP (Advanced Placement) classes to all students who show a motivation and dedication to their academics. However, the section of AP Psychology that I currently teach takes place first period everyday. Unfortunately some of my students are responsible for taking their younger siblings to school, so they often walk in late or miss class. In addition, when they miss class my students do not have access to a computer so they cannot look online to see the posted homework or missed notes.

First period attendance is a problem in my school that we are attempting to address on many fronts. However, this especially affects an AP class and the students' ability to pass the AP exam, as they need a certain amount of hours in the class. By utilizing a FlipVideo, I hope to record the lessons and post them online on our school's website in order for the students to still have access to the material. They will be able to access this by staying after school and working on a laptop I hope will be donated as my students do not have computers at home and are unable to use the very few working laptops our school owns.

The AP experience in high school not only exposes students to college-level material, but also puts some of the academic responsibility on them. Your donation will put into work, a system in which my students will be able to take responsibility for their own learning if they miss class. This will not only help them succeed in the AP class and the AP exam in May, but will prepare them for college. You will make it possible for my students to access material learned in the classroom lectures and activities, in addition to being able to research and type their assignments after school. They will be able to rent-out the laptop to do this, or they will be able to stay in the building. The laptop and FlipVideo will also allow them to record and create a presentation for their 2 end-of-semester projects where they teach a section of each unit to their classmates.
