My Students

The students in our classroom are young women who care about their grades and are active seekers of knowledge and engagement. Many commute long distances and all are committed to getting as much out of their public education as they can. Many also come from low-income households with parents who care and struggle to cover basic expenses. The girls have lots of responsibilities besides school, including developing their identities and relationships.

We all learn from each other!

Their backgrounds are diverse and their experiences can sometimes make a school day very difficult. Challenges are made and met on a daily basis: sometimes with frustration, sometimes with laughter. I have students who remember every single thing I say (which can be horrifying) and students who need encouragement to speak their mind (which is always worth the effort). It's a social studies class, so knowledgeable discourse is the goal. Their resilience, strength, and humor are an inspiration and a joy.

My Project

Although we all use our personal navigation systems these days, map skills are more important than ever! In Global Studies we deepen visual literacy skills with map conventions mastery. Appreciating scale, proper measurement and the problems with projections are better assessed when a student can work with a tactile resource of her own - not just a handout for a particular learning segment, or a glance at the classroom map.

Each student will carry this valuable reference tool in her notebook/folder.

The requested 24-page student atlases are lightweight, easy-to-read and grade-appropriate. The clear political boundaries and relief features will also provide the basis for exploring sociological questions simultaneously with historical information. More comprehensive atlases are available in our classroom library for deeper inquiry inspired by the gift of this personal resource.
