Many of my students are having their first experiences with sports this year: their first experiences scoring goals on a soccer team, beaming with pride with their first trophies. They are excited to participate with others and learn the value of movement that is fun!
All of my students in my classroom should be able to see themselves in the sports they are choosing, to see athletes who look like them.
These books feature a diverse representation of athletes and problem-solvers, including sports that are relevant to my students and the sports they are participating in.
We are working on writing autobiographies in our writing unit now, and these books would show my students examples of biographical writing featuring those who look like them, and those who excelled in sports with societal and systemic obstacles in front of them.
