Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Our students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th thru 8th and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander.
We have a variety of different learning challenges and needs that our students deal with on a daily basis.
25% of our students are currently an English Language Learner. Our Special Education students make up 10% of the entire site. We are working hard to ensure that all of our students get their needs met.
My Project
As Representative Grace Meng so rightfully pointed out in her testimony to the Judiciary Committee Hearing about AAPI treatment during COVID-19 much of the Asian American Story is left out of the history we teach in school. Our classroom is hoping to change that by educating our students on AAPI history.
Our classroom wants to spend time learning about the history surrounding the treatment of the AAPI community.
Our students are passionate about learning a wider version of history and making sure no one feels left out. They have asked us to include books like "Role Models Who Look Like Me: Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders Who Made History" so that they can do a Biography project around some AAPI Role Models. One student pointed out how rarely the school system brings us an AAPI Role Model for students to connect to. So we have put together a collection of books that will teach our students about a variety of heroes across many different disciplines. We want to make sure that every student finds someone to connect with. We want to make sure we have heroes from Art, Literature, Music, Science, Math, and Sports. The students will create google slides or posters about their chosen role model.
Our students have already done some research themselves and have started to learn about concepts like the Model Minority Myth and Yellow Peril. We want to keep this passion ongoing. I want my students to be excited to learn about new people and help break down stereotypes. Please help us bring this project alive so that all students can have the opportunity to learn and connect with different pieces of history and with new Role Models.
