My Students

The school where I teach is a large urban high school located in a section of my city where affluent, gentrified downtown neighborhoods intersect with industrial, low-income ones. Because of this, students in my classes come from a broad range of cultural and educational backgrounds. The school and our student body reflect a rich array of complementing, and sometimes conflicting, interests and lifestyles. The school and my classes are real microcosms of the economic and cultural divisions that animate American society more generally.

Almost 90% of my non-honors/IB/AP track students are second or third generation US citizens, or in some cases undocumented minors.

Some are homeless. A lot of these students come to school with no supplies; no backpack, no paper, no pens or pencils, and certainly no books. These students typically lack the material supplies and resources necessary for school. Yet, despite some challenges, most of these students bring enthusiasm, wit, and intellectual energy to class everyday along with a determination to learn and finish high school.

My Project

I teach multiple sections of 10th Grade World Literature, and we are in need of more copies of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights to use in the class. This is the novel we've selected as a representative of Victorian fiction (a period often considered a high-point of the novel form).

After some research about various titles from this period, my students are motivated to read this book, which will challenge them in a productive way at the sentence and word level as well as the narrative level--because of the layered narration Bronte uses to tell the story.

Many of my students are not in a position to purchase these texts on their own, so having this paperback version as a class text will ensure accessibility.
