My Students

Going green is a strategy devoted to protecting and preserving the environment for future generations. My art students want to be active participants in their future. They will promote public awareness of environmental issues through graphic design and raise funds to implement "Going Green" projects.

My students attend a middle school in Wisconsin.

The tough economic times are truly having an impact on the kids at our school. Reeling from the closing of GM and a number of other local companies, families are having a much harder time making it financially and emotionally. These struggles are having a huge impact on our kids, our schools and the community. Kids are resilient though and want to help make their community a better place to live. They are learning how going green can do just that. This project will inspire my students to become actively involved in a process that will promote a positive change in their community. They will become the teachers and show their families and community members that they can make a difference. They will learn small business concepts by planning, designing and creating a product (buttons, magnets, key chains) and then marketing that product and exploring how funds can be used for special projects that will have a positive impact on their community.

My Project

In my class I teach "real world" career based applications of art. Students are encouraged to make their art personal and learn how a visual message can have an impact on the world around them. They are also introduced to art careers and taught how art can lead to future opportunities. Students will explore promotional concepts and learn how images can communicate a personal message. They will create their own personal message through the use of graphic design and illustration techniques. Student designs will be displayed throughout the community and school in poster format and button pins will be created and sold at school events. Funds raised from the sale of these buttons will go towards a special project(to be determined by the students) that will continue to promote the concept of "going green." Parents and community members will be encouraged to work with the students on this special project.

Many of my students are surrounded by negativity...unemployed parents, closing businesses, homes for sale with no buyers, some without homes at all...many of these kids are unkept and come to school hungry.

But, they come to school! This is a small project that will provide these kids with a positive outlet for change. They need to know that they can make a difference. They need to feel that what they do is important. They need to see that if people work together good things can happen!
