Arts Coming to Life

My students need carving foam to practice creating three dimensional objects, ceramic glazes and a glazemaking handbook for use as a student resource. To learn printing techniques, students will need a screenprinting kit, carving tools, and linoleum sheets. To mount completed projects, students will need a variety of colored mats, and double-sided tape and velcro to hang these projects throughout the school.

I teach Art Design and Graphic Design at Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts. Although the focus of our school is art, we have very limited funding for art supplies. The arts are a much needed source of inspiration and self-expression for our high-needs student population, and educational research shows that young people engaged in art programs demonstrate improved self-confidence and higher academic achievement in the traditional classroom due to the critical thinking involved in creating and in responding to works of art. My students require some very basic materials to study and practice techniques in printmaking, sculpting, and ceramic arts, and we currently do not have the funding to purchase any of these materials. By offering your generous assistance, not only will you be contributing to the beautification of the school community, but you will also be empowering our students to become participatory creators of culture.
