Arts and Technology: A New Way to Educate

Help me give my students technology in the art room. Traditional means of teaching the arts will fall flat with this generation of tech-savvy students. It is crucial that we integrate technology into arts education.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It was not long ago that arts education in schools was thought to be a luxury, and arts classes were cut from the curriculum to make room for more time to prepare for standardized tests. Thankfully, times have changed and there is a big push for arts in education. My school (a title 1 school in Brooklyn) was fortunate to become a Magnet school for communication and mixed media arts. This has introduced a lot of our students to technology in the classroom. Many of my low income students do not have technology at home so it has been pretty exciting for them.

This change has, of course, impacted my art room.

Increased access to technology affects almost everything we do, from the way we deliver instruction to the way students access materials to the art making processes we teach. Now we can teach students to use their devices to access literally millions of artworks. We can expose our students to new forms of tech-based art like animation and digital sketching.

The benefit of technology integration into arts education is tremendous. It is our responsibility to meet this generation of children in an educational environment that they can

My Project

How many times as an art teacher do I have students who have great ideas but don't know what something looks like or how to get started. I would like my students to be able to use iPads in order to obtain access millions of artworks.

I want to expose my students to new forms of tech-based art like animation and digital sketching.

Osmo is a new program I will be using with my students that requires the use of an iPad. This interactive tool helps students create drawings with perfect proportions, promotes had and eye coordination, and helps students improve their dexterity while recreating their favorite images. Lastly it gives students self-expression as it develops individuality through choices in art creations.
