Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Special Education teacher in a New York City public high school. I teach 9th and 10th grade self-contained English and resource room. The disabilities of my students include speech/language impairments, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's, severe emotional disturbance, and more. All of my students are bright, motivated people who need that extra push to succeed. I am touched and inspired by their ability to face these tremendous obstacles.

My students are very creative individuals who respond well to hands-on, interactive projects. At the end of each unit, I require students to complete a project. I provide them with a list of options and they pick the project that best suits their interests. The projects are both writing based and arts based. I allow my students to choose from a wide range of options because I want to appeal to all of their learning styles. Some of the options include making a comic strip about the book, creating their own book cover, making a brochure, etc.

I would love to continue assigning these hands-on assessments. However, my classroom is running out of basic supplies such as scissors and glue. At this point in time, there are not enough supplies for all of my students. They have to share the resources. This causes a problem because students have to wait for the materials they wish to use. If my students had enough supplies, time would not be wasted waiting for materials.

If I had the necessary supplies, I would be able to plan the activities that my students find so enjoyable. I am confident that these interactive activities will help students to better understand and remember the reading. Your help will make it possible for my Special Education students to express themselves in a creative way. These projects provide an alternative outlet for expression.
