Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hi! I teach at a continuation high school, Foothill, in East San Jose. Our school takes students that are removed from other high schools for a variety of reasons including: truancy, incarceration, and pregnancy. We also have students with small children (we have a Family Learning Center where student moms and dads learn parenting skills). Most of our students are at poor and at risk. At Foothill, we meet students where they are at and attempt to turn them onto becoming lifelong learners. Several of my students have informed me that Foothill was the first school that had proposed college as an option for them. I teach a course called Special Projects where seniors earn credits in subject areas varying from Algebra to World History that they need to graduate. Since our campus is small, 450 students, our staff and facilities can not offer many choices for electives. In my Special Projects class, I ask students to complete projects, make artwork, learn new skills, crafts, etc. that they have an interest in learning. I officially work with eighty or so students, but I turn no one away after school, so I interact with and design projects for about one-hundred students. I buy whatever art supplies I can afford out of my own pocket, which is quite limited at this time, and we still have need of many items for arts and crafts including: poster board, drawing paper, pencils and charcoal pencils, all types of art paint brushes, water color paints and paper, acrylic pastels, cardstock, origami paper, spray varnish, decoupage glue, glass etching cream, glass paint, string, lanyard cord, beads, findings, earwires, beading cords, beading needles, stretch cord and wrapping wire. I offer this alternative to my students as an elective because I know that students become lifelong learners from having positive learning experiences. In this class they can design, create, and learn new skills that they will continue to enjoy throughout their lives and hopefully pass onto their families.
