Artroom Supplies for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

My students need materials, such as discovery tubes, glue, and wooden building set, in the art room to support their learning styles so that they can enjoy creating art while making interdisciplinary and real world connections.

My Students

I teach visual and performing arts to students in grades k-1 with autism spectrum disorders. A typical day in the classroom is based on clarity and structure. Not having enough or proper materials in the classroom, interferes and greatly inhibits the structure in which is needed to enhance learning

Our school is located in a brand new public school building, which it shares with a general education school.

Our school consists of 6:1:1 and 12:1:1 classes. Every child in our school has a different learning style and requires special adaptations and modifications throughout the school day to cater to their needs. Despite the diversity in needs, each classroom must be equipped with the necessary and appropriate materials to make learning accessible for all students.

My Project

The materials in which I have requested will go towards creating visual supports and differentiating art experiences to meet my students' learning styles. These materials I believe will also help them to develop transferable skills, such as literacy, number sense, hand-eye coordination, social and emotional skills, among others, which they can apply outside of the art room. With grade- leveled art books, I could build our classroom library so that my students could continue working on developing early literacy skills even in the art room. In addition, with materials such as the Kapla blocks my students would be able to develop hand-eye coordination, while learning how to count or use shapes and materials to build or communicate their understanding of shape and structures around their community. Other materials such as the play food assortment, I believe would be useful when teaching about still lifes or when making social studies/ emotional literacy connections through art.

This project will make a difference in my students' life because the materials will offer more engaging opportunities in the art room for students to make interdisciplinary connections in school as well as self to real world connections when outside of school.

As a teacher. these materials will also offer more opportunities to differentiate and make art exploration accessible for all my students.
