My Project

High school is oftentimes the last opportunity for a learning scholar to learn art skills for free before entering into college and other outside paid art courses. The creative arts are unfortunately a department less funded and the first to be cut out of most American schools. I want to give my students the chance to develop their artistic passion and skills further in a course that allows them to hone a different part of their brain in their academic schedule. It was my high school's studio art class where I was able to discover an interest in using pen and ink and learn skills that transcended into who I am today as an artist. It gave me the courage to try other mediums and even pursue art school upon graduation.

These drawing pads, brushes, and pencils will allow my students to gain the courage of growing as an artist without the burden of needing to buy their own supplies.

It will be a chance for them to get to experiment with tools they may not have a chance otherwise, and maybe even pursue art as a career. I hope this course will allow them to see the artist in themselves that they could become, and create a space where they may gain the skills they can take with them throughout life.

We need to not forget that our world is a very dull place without art. Without the fashion we love to wear -- the sneakers, the handbags, and hats. Comic books, webtoons, manga, CD covers, book covers, and concept designs for TV and movies. It all begins somewhere. This somewhere can start small. And in this case, this place will be here in high school.
