Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a spunky group of sixth graders with a strong interest in art and design. I teach math, social studies, and science to two classes and see 62 students during the course of the day. I like to provide options for projects that cater to various learning styles, and this group of kids overwhelmingly chooses artistic and hands-on ways of demonstrating their learning.

Many of my students are still developing academic reading and writing skills that are needed to show their learning in a traditional read and write an essay format.

My students shine when presented with the option to make a picture showing what is happening in math problem, design a board game to show events in the daily lives of an ancient civilization, or build a model to show producers and consumers in an ecosystem.

These are learning opportunities that allow my English Learners, students with specialized learning needs, and talented and gifted learners all show their unique talents and demonstrate critical thinking. Most of my students do not have access to art classes or supplies outside of school.

My Project

I have two spirited classes of sixth-graders who let their presence be known. Their talents and abilities do not always show in traditional written assignments. I am seeking 10 sets of paint brushes, sets of watercolor paints, paper, and pastels that will allow my students creative ways to demonstrate their learning in math, science, and social studies.

"What do we get to design for this unit?" This is what my sixth-graders ask with excitement each time we begin studying a new topic.

This is a drastic change from when I assigned essays as the way to show they learned something from reading a book together. My students still learn from texts and include written elements in their projects, but they have shown me they need to apply this learning by creating something visual.

When they get to design and create artistic demonstrations of their learning I see a focused and engaged class. We make pictures to show what is happening in a math problem, design board games with questions from a text they have read, build boats to understand buoyancy, and draw the animals in the ecosystem they are studying. I would like to bring in paint and pastels as alternatives to the crayons we use for everything so my students can experience different art media as they create and design.
