Public Art creates an environment of possibilities and connectedness within a community. This project would bring together my high school students to mentor local elementary school students in creating public murals during weekend workshops. We need your help to make this possible.
My high school students are comprised of low-income families who are often unable to give their children the school supplies they need.
My school has a mandatory one year Art I class for all students and several advanced classes for serious students to excel in. Many of the supplies bought for these classes come from donations or local fundraising.
My school is in a community that is starting to demand that their high school become a more viable option for their kids to attend. A parent of a local elementary school reached out to my art department and the art teacher at her daughters school to develop an art education/community collaborative called ART*eology. The main goal of our group is to enrich our community through the making of public art and the bringing together of high school and elementary school students.
These paint supplies would create ten 3'x5' murals on the back campus of the high school.
My Project
I am hoping that through this experience, my students will gain an understanding of themselves as part of a community. They will learn how to teach the young elementary school artists by mentoring them one-on-one in the creation and execution of a 3'x5' mural. The design of the murals will need to be researched and discussed within the group. They will learn about compromise and problem solving within a collaborative project. They will also learn painting techniques such as mixing and blending.
The most wonderful thing about this project is that not only will my students gain from this experience, but the entire community will because this work will be on the outside wall of our school campus where people from the community bring their kids to play. This will also build confidence within my students and the elementary students for future artistic endeavors.
Your generous contribution will provide my students with the materials to feel like a professional artist.
You will empower their sense of confidence in the artwork they produce and encourage them to continue taking art and beauty seriously in their lives. You may even help that one (or more) student realize their dreams of being an artist.
