Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Living in an inner city infested with crime, poverty and gangs are the reality my students face on a daily basis. Their financial resources are extremely limited since my students' parents are in a constant struggle to provide food, shelter and basic necessities.

My kindergarten students attend an urban public elementary school in which all of its nine hundred children receive a federally funded free-lunch program.

Because of students' impoverished conditions, the school also receives Title 1 funds. All of my students are second language learners and many have parents with none or very limited English language skills. My students are from low economic backgrounds. They are hard workers and inquisitive learners. They enjoy participating in class discussions and are always anxious to learn about new subject matter. My students love music, dance and drawing. They are captivated by fables and folk tales. They also enjoy listening to animated stories. Because they are five and six years old, they thrive off of illustrated books, visuals, and hands-on materials.

My Project

Because of their impoverished and crime-ridden neighborhood, my students are often enclosed in their homes after school, unable to explore the world around them. Moreover, our few classroom computers are slow, outdated and not compatible with current technology. However, through the use of Apple iPad 2s, I can open doors to art museums that my students cannot visit in person. My students will be able to take virtual tours of art galleries and exhibitions that are out of their reach. With the iPad 2s, I can Empower Students Through Art by introducing them to artists that share my students' cultural backgrounds. Students' interests could be further captured by exposing them to art from their native countries. Having Apple iPad 2s in my classroom would Empower Students Through Art.

My students are currently at a disadvantage when it comes to technology in the classroom.

However, this can all be changed by incorporating 2 Apple iPad 2s. They could truly open doors of inquiry and investigation. The iPad 2s could access art and music that could further inspire my students' learning. The Apple iPad 2s could help my classroom overcome its technological limitations and thus, Empower Students Through Art.
