Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a wonderful, spirited mix of personalities and abilities. The class is a 3rd grade ICT, which means that approximately 40% of the students are classified as Special Education. In addition, many of our children speak English as their second language.

Prior to the Pandemic, this particular group of children was known for their chattiness, love of fun and laughter, and their sense of community.

As first graders, they were especially loyal to each other, and cared deeply for their friends.

This is why I am particularly concerned for their emotional well being. My co- teacher and I will need to get creative to help them feel safe. I know that art helps children to be able to express themselves, especially those with special needs or a language barrier. This is essential for my class in order for them to heal and learn.

My Project

Returning to school this year will not be easy for anyone. Our children have experienced an overwhelming challenge. They are, by nature, social and animated beings, who, in many ways, have been isolated and silenced. My students will have questions, fears and feelings that will be difficult for them to express.

This is why this year it is so extremely important that my young students have many and varied art supplies to help them express their ideas.

Our school has a very tight budget that doesn’t allow for many extras. There is no art program available to them. I propose to create an entire corner of my room to be freely available for the children as they need it. It may be used when they become overwhelmed, sad, frustrated, or just need some fun. In addition, My co-teacher and I will incorporate art projects with our weekly lessons.

I envision my classroom as a beautiful, welcoming, second home for my students where they can not only learn, but heal and grow stronger after the year they have endured. I believe that as they see their creative work surround them, they will grow in resilience and trust. They will once again be optimistic about attending school. They will feel safe in their ability to express themselves in a non-judge mental and creative way. Please help me give them that opportunity.
