Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I believe that it is crucial for my students with special needs to express themselves through creative outlets such as art. Many of them are nonverbal and are unable to communicate their emotional and mental state in an appropriate way. The various art materials that I am requesting would make an incredible difference in my students' learning and overall mental wellbeing. My students with intellectual disabilities benefit greatly from art based learning. I plan on using the felt pieces and fiber stuffing to help them learn how to sow. Sowing can be a fun and therapeutic activity for my students to do when they feel stressed or overstimulated. Using the felt and stuffing, my students can create small stuffed animals/characters that they can keep with them or share with others. The other materials such as markers, glue, glitter, and modeling compound are also important in planning colorful and creative art projects. Often times, my special education students feel frustrated by traditional academic methods such as writing assignments and exams. Art provides them with a break from these stressors and allows me to supplement the important academic work with activities that they enjoy to make the school day less stressful. I plan to cover topics about the various emotions using these specific materials. These art materials would provide them with a creative outlet to learn more about their emotions and discover healthy ways to communicate their feelings.
