My Students
Our sixth-grade students are very diverse and have a lot of personality! At this age, students are "awakening" their "adult minds" and asking all the questions they can. It is a lot of fun to work with students in this grade level because they have a lot of opinions and ideas, as well as curiosities.
At our school, we have lots of cultural capital and we focus on working together and supporting each other as a community.
Many of our students tend to praise and recognize one another on a regular basis, and often, the "new kids" are immediately "folded" into the existing social structure, gaining a family of friends in an instant. It is a real joy to watch them interact and explore as they mature.
My Project
My students (and their families) are still experiencing ongoing trauma from the pandemic and many are struggling to reconnect with learning in the regular classroom environment. Too many have lost confidence in their own abilities and self-worth because they have fallen so far behind “grade level expectations” due to “distance learning.”
However, my students are also bright and creative and they deserve the chance to rediscover their confidence by expressing themselves with art.
By providing a set of mixed-media materials for every student, I hope to give them that chance! Many of them like to use their hands and many of them like to draw and/or paint.
With your support, each student would receive 1 pound of clay, a set of sculpting tools, a set of 6 acrylic paints, a brush set and a mixing palette. They would all be able to create anything their minds can imagine, in full-color 3-D, while also finding joy in their own abilities and their school day!
