My Students

I work at a very small Title 1 Elementary school in Baltimore City as the Visual Arts teacher. Our school went online March 13, 2020 and we will be starting out the new school year online once again. 100% of my students qualify for free meals and many look forward to school every day for food, social interactions with friends and teachers, as well as an exceptional staff that are truly the best teachers I have ever worked with.

Around 75% of my students are English Language Learners from South America, Africa, China, Vietnam, Nepal, Middle East, and Mexico, so art is an exceptional way to have all students participate without stressing too much about being English proficient.

While teaching online, I noticed that most of my students lacked art supplies at home. Digital tools are great for art, but I want them to have art supplies in their hands at home this year so we can make some great art projects together.

My Project

After teaching online Visual Arts classes to my students in the Spring, I realized we (my students and I) were limited to the art assignments due to a majority of my students not having art supplies at home. Digital formats were great for my kids to learn and explore, but I felt I was doing a disservice as their Visual Arts Instructor when I couldn't put art materials into their hands for learning mediums.

The materials I am requesting will be distributed to every student in the school when they pick up their digital devices the week of August 31.

I want to make sure that I give them a good supply of the minimum art materials they will need for the first few quarters in the new school year.

Since all of my students are on free/reduced lunches, the families that already struggle are in a particularly bad spot with job losses over the past few months. I don't want my kids to go without because they cannot afford a few simple items for art class that I would normally provide for them in my art room.

These supplies will make an incredible impact for my students. Nearly 70% of my students are English Language learners and art class means so much to them. It would make them so happy to start out the new year online art curriculum with the supplies they need.
