My Students

Give the gift of an arts education! Underprivileged kids ought to have the same access to education that rich or middle class kids have, including training in the arts. It is a moral obligation - don't you think?

I am a first grade teacher in California.

Approximately 60 percent of the students at our school are African American, about 30 percent are Latino, and the remaining 10 percent are a mix of Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo American and others. I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational program I deliver. As in all areas of school supply, there is an area of need for art materials. Yes, in our classroom we do have some supplies: standard crayons (8 colors), standard newsprint drawing paper, white office printer paper, construction paper in standard colors (for example, one shade of green, one shade of brown etc. . . ). And last year the kids in my class received a donation from DonorsChoose.org - all well-used and highly appreciated. Yes, kids feel fortunate to have these materials, but the supply from last year is dwindling and needs to be replenished.

My Project

Students will use these various art materials to find new dimensions of creative expression. True! Students will be able to explore color and line with the pens, crayons, and watercolors I have ordered. They will be able to assemble collages with the sequins, paper, and other craft supplies, and they will be able explore math concepts through the use of the origami and beading materials.

It is always a great pleasure for me to see students engaged in lessons that have real meaning for them.

In my classroom, art is always connected with a theme that my students are currently studying. The supplies that you provide will form an important part of the meaningful, culturally relevant curriculum that I strive to deliver. Rest assured: your donation will make a real difference.
