My Students

I teach Visual Arts, grades K-5 in a special needs school for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Every child learns differently and requires different modalities for learning and expression of knowledge. Many of my students are visual learners, who enjoy learning with tangible materials that offer hands-on and tactile learning practice.

The incorporation of tactile materials such as model magic and tempera paint sticks in the art classroom will provide opportunities for kinesthetic and differentiated learning experiences as well as build better communication skills through art making.

Having these new materials in the classroom will also bring more engagement, as it will allow my students to feel more ownership and independence in their learning experiences.

My Project

As we kickstart another new semester, it has become apparent that we go through art materials very quickly! As a result, the art room is in need of some new materials to carry us through a few more months. We are currently in need of items such as dry erase markers and sculpting materials, as well as a laminating machine.

These materials will provide for numerous forms of creative learning through drawing, sculpting, and mixed media art forms.

In addition, we are also in need of a new laminator to create visual communication symbols for our students to reference in the art room when creating art with peers.
