Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Will the classrooms be clean? How different does a high school classroom look compared to a middle school one? These are some of the questions students wrote on their end-of-the-year survey when I asked them what they were most nervous about for the next school year.

After a year and a half of remote learning during a time when many students dealt with incredible loss and hardships, my students are happy to return to the classroom this fall -- with a few reservations.

In order to combat these reservations and to support students' mental health, classroom engagement, community building, and creating a welcoming environment will be of paramount importance this fall.

My Project

For this project, I am requesting basic art supplies such as colored pencils, pens, construction paper, watercolors, and markers to be used for art activities in English class. The first few weeks of school will be focused on social-emotional activities while we read some poems and short stories to help students feel comfortable back in the classroom. To make these activities engaging, I'd like to infuse art into the lessons to allow students a chance to explore the literature and their emotions creatively. Students will explore symbols, sketch themes, and create scenes based on our reading. I am really excited about the skin color colored pencils and markers, which will enable students to create images that look like themselves and the world around them.

Students learn best by doing and being able to explore their creativity.

With your help, my students will be able to engage in lessons in a creative manner while also processing their own emotions and thoughts. After a year of online instruction, while surviving a pandemic, students will need both art and literature to begin to heal.
