Help Mrs. Jenerik

I teach 7th & 8th grades at a wonderful, diverse, project and arts-based small charter school in urban San Francisco. My school classes are high poverty with many students on free and reduced lunch. In my diverse classroom, many of my students are tactile, kinesthetic learners who learn best from feeling and touching concepts and ideas. As a teacher,, I bring a special passion for utilizing multiple modalities to the classroom to allow information to be accessible to all type of learners. In 7th grade, the social studies standards are teaching medieval times, and, in 8th grade, it's US History.

As a tactile learner, I truly identify and empathize with the frustrations and struggles of those students who try their best, but don't immediately understand a concept from reading or listening. Students begin to feel insufficient and not capable of success. It is extremely important to me to find ways to allow the amazing breadth of information to be accessible, fun and interesting to all students, especially those whose self-esteem has seemed to suffer from often feeling inadequate to the task. I have observed these brilliant children come to life and teach what they know with confidence and accuracy. I believe it is important to teach where the student is at; not where we think they should be; allowing their strengths to support their struggles. If a curriculum does not allow for those strengths to be recognized, imagine how it feels to be working on your struggles all day, day after day. By giving the students a tactile, kinesthetic modality for learning and reinforcing knowledge, the students can feel successful and invested in their education.

By having sufficient glue guns with glue, paint, markers and other art supplies, this project will be a very successful, fun learning tool. Imagine: Twelve K-8 classes touring the Medieval times diorama display and US History museum led and taught by 7th and 8th graders who recap a year of learning, the smiles on the children's faces as they observe the castles, knights, pottery, African traders and more, or the students paintings, sculptures and busts of events and persons from US History. With your generous support, I can provide enough supplies to allow the students' creativity to re-teach and reinforce their own knowledge. Because art supplies can be very expensive and many of my students do not have the family resources to help purchase for the classroom, we need several packets of molding clay to make this museum a reality. This experience will enrich each student's life and provide the basis for ongoing social studies education and stewardship as they prepare for high school and their careers beyond these walls.

Teaching is a very powerful learning tool. I truly believe that creating and presenting the museum and dioramas to many other children serves as an incredibly empowering tool for all children, especially children with learning differences where sometimes simply reading information does not create knowledge. Some students need to feel the concepts and then they too can utilize the powerful reinforcement tool of teaching. As these students present their knowledge with confidence, they feel like an important part of a community. With your help, we will give these young people a unique experience as well as confidence in their abilities that can be in all aspects of their life.
