My Students

Concerns about where their next meal will come from, finding a pencil to write with, sharing a single smart phone, or tablet with a sibling and parent to get work done: these are things children shouldn't have to worry about, yet my students face these issues daily and still manage to sign on and attempt their assignments! Our school is a high-poverty, Title I School, with an Economic Need Index of 82.5%.

Artistic expression is a universal language, half of my students are new to this country and are working hard to learn a new language, in my online art classes, I try to create opportunities for my students to be successful during that process!

I am consistently amazed by their innovative ideas. Given the right resources, there is no telling what they can accomplish.

My Project

It is so important for a child to have a chance to imagine and to create. On Thursday, March 19th my students left school at 2:20 pm, not realizing that they wouldn't be returning for the remainder of the school year. Many of my students are sharing the limited school supplies they have at home with their siblings and parents.

Each time I assign an art project, it breaks my heart to see torn pieces of paper with drawings done in pencil or black pen, followed by an apology from a parent or an older sibling, stating that this was the best they could do with the supplies they have at home.

Each of my students deserves to have their own art supplies at home to create art and to complete other assignments as well. Please help me make this happen!
