As a teacher in the Cleveland School District, my students come from all walks of life. We have students who are from low-income/high poverty families, students who are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom, and many gifted and talented students. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. I want all my students to experience art no matter their background or where they are from.
For many of my students, art is an outlet from all the testing and academics.
It is a place for them to be creative and relax. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My Project
I want my students to experience the process of art while being safe.
As we navigate the current Covid-19 pandemic, it is a good time to be mindful about art supplies and ways to prevent the spread of illness.
Droplets in the air can be breathed in and also land on surfaces including work spaces and art supplies. Protecting students from harm includes having clean art supplies. One infection prevention protocol is to have Ziploc bags with art supplies for each student. This way each student has their own bag containing clean materials.
I still want my students to be able to experience and learn about
art, and not just do some crafts once or twice a week. During this unforeseen time I have to find unusual and new techniques that can be used at home and the classroom. These supplies will allow my students to experience their normal art lesson that they would have had at school.
Having these supplies allow students to experiment with new techniques, mediums or tools. These supplies are also multipurpose. They can not only be used for sketching, art class, but for other uses such as a keeping diary or journal documenting this time in history. For many students they find art is a form of art therapy that quiets your left brain while allowing your right brain to express itself. It gives many students peace from what is going on around them.
