This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I plan to use the materials to make my art classroom more welcoming and comforting for my troubled students. I want to create a reading/relaxing/mindfulness corner with art books so students can step away if they need to. Other items, such as the paper trays and storage cubes, will be used to organize the class and make some areas look more welcoming.

I have many students who struggle emotionally, and my classroom has become a safe haven for students that may be feeling anxious or depressed.

For example, last year I would hand out boondoggle cord for those feeling anxious. Many students came to my class to create boondoggle keychains if they were overwhelmed. I have some fidgets on my desk for students who may need them. Students often grab them during independent work time, and it helps them focus. Throughout the school day, if I see a student experiencing overwhelming emotion, I usually ask them if they'd like to step into the hallway to collect themselves. It would be great if they were able to instead go to an area of the room and use the various sensory items that will help them calm down.
