My Students

I am the Visual Arts Teacher in a specialized school for students with disabilities, ranging from Autism Spectrum to behavioral-emotional impairment. Additionally, the majority of my students come from disadvantaged environments, meaning that the supplies I am able to give them are the only supplies they have.

My students take great pride in their work and the skills that they develop, which in turn, increases their independence and self efficacy, which is key to their growth.

The positive self image that is developed as they create and engage is priceless and immeasurable. In this unprecedented time, we have lost much of the funding that would have supported the arts learning that is so vital, not only to the academic, but the social-emotional well being of my students. It is my great joy to watch my children, not only learn and grow, but flourish and believe in their abilities.

My Project

This year school will be a mix remote and blended learning, with students attending in person part time or fully remote learning. Due to safety protocols, all of my students must have their own art supply kits filled with the basic art materials, such as crayons, paint, pencils, and markers, as well as a sketch book, so they may always have their personal supplies, whether they are at home or in the school building. This will enable them to continue to create and engage in meaningful art experiences, wherever they are, without fear of contamination.

As the majority of my students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, they are unable to supply their own materials; these kits will enable them to have everything they need at all times.

My integrated art program, synthesizes learning across the curriculum and focuses on the intersect of art with other disciplines, such as math, science and social studies. Students create their own works, based on lessons that reference artists and genres, whose works also connect to other curricular areas. The lessons support and facilitate learning by addressing my students unique and diverse learning styles.
