My Project
About My Project:
I am incredibly fortunate to work with a group of 8th grade students who are full of curiosity, creativity, and a love for creating art work.
This project is an opportunity to tap into their creativity and allow them to see history through a more personal, artistic lens, and to develop understandings of the complexities of the past that are hard to explain through words alone.
The art journals and watercolor supplies will help my students learn by providing them with a hands-on, engaging way to process and internalize historical concepts. As we explore history throughout the year, students will create visual representations of the events, figures, and ideas they encounter. Currently we do this on standard copy paper that we turn into booklets, but the art bleeds through, the paper rips, and we can't make journals that will last through the year. By being able to keep their art through the year in one places, they'll have the chance to really see and reflect on the view of the past they have created at the end of the year, and identify themes in their learning and the history they've studied.
The main goal of this project is to foster a deeper understanding of history by incorporating artistic expression into our studies. This is an important and proven way to develop critical thinking skills, cultivate creativity, allow students to tap into their unique talents and perspectives, promote a love of history, support students who may learn best through visual and hands-on activities, and infuse multiple types of wisdom and racial reconciliation work into our class.
My students shine when they can create art, and show so much insight into the world. Thank you.
