Our school is located in Waterbury, Connecticut. Waterbury has approximately 17,500 students, 1,300 enrolled at our school. As one of the three art teachers in the school, I am responsible for teaching approximately 1/4 of the population. The students I see range in skill level from basic or beginner to more advanced. Overall, the students enjoy the arts and find peace in taking these classes. I teach a variety of areas within the arts from drawing and painting to sculpture and portfolio preparation. The students in my room are eager to learn in the arts and come with a lot of creativity. For some of my students, art is one of the only subjects they find true success in, one of the only classes they express interest in or just use it as an extension of their inner self. For others, art is a new subject to them and they often find that they can enjoy art and find out more about themselves through the subject. I try to encourage my students to utilize the arts as a way to find themselves.
My Project
This year, my students will be returning to my art class with concerns stemming from Covid-19. I would like to reassure them that I have taken those concerns to heart by providing each student with a barrier, a pencil case and reminder that they need to wear masks in my classroom. I also have added a document projector so I can provide art demonstrations at a safe distance. I am hoping that these supplies will help to assist in a safe return to my class for the 2020-2021 school year.
