Help me give my students art supplies including various papers and fabrics, mosaic and sculpture supplies, basket weaving sets, paints, and sewing supplies.
Our classroom is an open and inviting environment designed to foster independent student learning. My students are thirsty for new materials to continue their education.
I teach in a public urban multi-age Montessori school with sixty-five first through sixth-grade students.
My students learn through small group and individual lessons, research and inquiry, and by going out into our community. My students come from all different backgrounds racially and socioeconomically and live in an urban setting. My co-teacher and I are piloting a combined Montessori 1st-6th grade classroom.
My students are involved in social justice and environmental conscious movements, taking a stand and trying to better the world. Our students work hard with the resources they have to follow their passions and find meaning in their education.
My Project

We believe that students should have access to quality, authentic art supplies to engage in meaningful Montessori art lessons and create unique pieces of art.
Elementary children love art. They are naturally creative and are looking to expressive themselves. In our classroom, we have adopted Julie Karlonas' "Sharing Art with Children in the Montessori Way." Our Lower Elementary students (1st - 3rd) focus on "An Introduction to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, and our Upper Elementary students (4th - 5th) focus on "Introduction to Three Dimensional Materials."
We chose these texts because they follow these six principles:
1. Nurture, honor, and guard the precious artistic spirit of each child.
2. Treat each child with respect as an individual and as an artist.
3. Create meaningful and developmentally appropriate art experiences.
4. Use quality art materials.
5. Establish an organized and visually appealing art environment.
6. Prepare for any eventuality. If a child shows particular interest in a medium or discipline, the child must have the proper materials and the freedom to investigate.

In order to make this happen, we need art supplies. Students will use the engraving tool, pebbles, soapstone, grout, sand art kit, and sculpting tools for stone art lessons. They will use silk, hemp, liquid watercolors, burlap, and rollers for fabric art lessons. Non-hardening clay, stamps, and sculpting tools will be used for clay art lessons. Wood burning tools, papyrus, printing paper, wooden sticks, and wooden beads will be used to create wood art lessons.
The materials in this project align with our specific lessons and will allow us to have a vibrant art experience in our classroom!
