Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is a small Title I K-5 public school in New York City. Small schools mean even smaller budgets. My second grade students are creative, inquisitive, and eager to learn. I use hands-on projects to reinforce science and social studies units, but I often have to scale back or eliminate these projects due to lack of materials and art supplies.

When we incorporate art into science and social studies, I see my students become more engaged during the project and retain the information long after the unit ends.

When we add art, STEM becomes STEAM, and that change makes science accessible for kids that may otherwise be left behind.

My Project

STEAM is an educational initiative created by the Rhode Island School of Design that adds the arts to the original STEM framework. For our school it is even more important to combine art with core curriculum because we don't have funding for a dedicated art teacher.

It's one thing to read about pollinators and flowers and another to create the parts of the flower with clay and paint murals with pollinators. The requested art supplies will support our Schools around the World, Fossils and Pollinator units in our second grade class. These projects will be included in the student portfolios and displayed in the school.

Paint, paper, modeling clay, and all the art supplies changes science from words on a page something they can touch. What kid will pass up the chance to get their hands dirty? Our hands-on science and social studies projects will make a material difference in how my class retains the information. More importantly, it will inspire my students to be scientists and innovators, as they move on the upper grades and beyond.
