This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Art was one of my favorite subjects in school and over the past 13 years of teaching, I have noticed art is among one of my student's favorite subjects. Since New York City schools have had significant budget cuts, hardly any art supplies have been purchased for our classrooms. We are in need!

My school is in a low income neighborhood in Queens.

I have been a classroom teacher for 13 years. Year after year, we receive students fresh from their countries, not speaking a word of English. Our student population is not native to the United States of America. Most of the students are from South America and Asia. They are the most eager, sweetest children who have their eyes wide open when it comes to anything that focuses on drawing, painting, or printing. But due to funding, Art has taken a backseat to all other academic areas. Music and Art are the first programs to be taken out of our schools. I want to keep Art alive in my classroom!

My Project

These art supplies will be so great for the students, especially since they are multicultural. I remember growing up and there were never different shades of browns and whites to depict all cultures. These art supplies, especially the construction paper and crayons, really address all colors of the rainbow and all races in my classroom. I can't wait to show these different colors to my children. Every year in my classroom, I have the children create mosaic self-portraits with different colored construction paper. Now with these supplies, they can finally choose the appropriate skin color to match their faces. They will be so excited!

Unfortunately, art isn't a major part of our day and the children only receive art class once a week, having these supplies readily available to us, will make art time so much more enjoyable and personable.

Having adequate amounts of scissors and glue for the children to use independently instead of waiting for their partner or table group to finish would be so satisfying. Classroom management during art time would be easier to manage.
