I teach 9th grade Life Skills and 11th grade US History at an urban medical magnet high school.

In my urban medical magnet high school, there are few opportunities for my students to exhibit their knowledge through art. Furthermore, the school provides little, if any, art supplies for my students. Most of my students cannot afford to purchase the necessary supplies to complete the art exhibitions. Last year, when I asked my Life Skills students to define and depict their opinion of sweatshops, they produced brilliant, creative and extremely thoughtful art exhibitions. I would like to continue to assign projects like this to my students this year. However, without these simple art supplies, my students cannot creatively and meaningfully exhibit their learning through art. I do not want to limit my students' learning because we cannot afford these supplies.

In both my Life Skills and US History classes, I have found success in asking my students to exhibit their knowledge through art. With budget cuts, art classes are disappearing. Thus, I try to incorporate art exhibitions in every unit. The butcher paper, glue, color pencils and crayons, rulers and scissors will allow my students to continue to practice art and incorporate it in our social studies classes.

With these simple art supplies, my students will be able to show the class and me not only what they learned, but their ideas and opinions as well. This cannot be done through a multiple choice test where they just regurgitate what they heard or read. I want my students to be able to meaningfully produce their own knowledge and exhibit to our class and our school.
