My Students

My students come from a high poverty, low-income district and many of the students have less than ideal home lives. Some are English Language Learners (ELL) and they treat art as a privilege and use art to express themselves. Regardless of their situation, the students have a passion for learning.

Recently, Hurricane Irma uprooted trees at our school, destroyed the sign with school's name, fallen trees and debris covered the grounds.

Before Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Matthew uprooted the cemented tree on the P.E. Court and P.E. was canceled for a month.

Some of my students' stories are unbelievable. Many of them went to shelters that were overcrowded. Some of my students stated that they had no transportation to get to the shelters and were very afraid during the Hurricane. The water was contaminated and had to be boiled. I cannot tell you the many stories I heard, but I will say that the stories bring tears to your eyes. My students will benefit with the resources because many of them have academic challenges. Literacy plays an important part in my art classes. Students are eager to learn new ideas, concepts while creating and expressing their feelings and emotions through art.

My Project

The materials will make a major impact in my art class and will help my students capture their feelings and emotions on paper regarding the effects of Hurricanes. The students are seated at six tables with 4 students at each table. I have about seven different classes a day, five days a week. The six groups will be able to utilize all resources during their class time. There will be centers set up to engage each group with different resources and each group will rotate in order to experience each art center during their class their class time.

We will research, design and demonstrate the different structures that may withstand strong winds and rain.

We will use the art paper and colored pencils to draw. We are excited about how we will utilize the 10 Great Makerspace Projects, Comic Strip Layout Board Pack, paint, laptop, tablets, printer, books, laptop, and colored pencils. The printer will be used to print out artwork that can be designed and painted on canvas to display throughout our school. The laptop and tablets will be used for research and pull up artwork, take pictures and color on with the different internet programs, and infuse technology during art.

Without the help of generous donors, we can not afford even the most basic supplies. Please help me by funding this project to so my students will be able to express and embrace what happened and excel in academics through creative expression and artwork.

It must be noted one of my students is very creative and can draw anything, but his anger and emotions are out of control. Technology will especially benefit him by allowing him to use the tablet to research the various aspects of art and how it relates to his emotions.
