My Students

Imagine what it is like to be in an art classroom, but there is a very limited amount of materials to create it. The challenge my students face is trying to create compelling works of art, working from a very limited amount of supplies.

My students are a makeup of mostly two minority populations; Hispanic and African American located in Southern California.

They attend school in an economically disadvantaged community, but that does not stop them from coming to school everyday with an eagerness to learn. Each morning when I welcome them into the classroom, they politely say, "Good morning Ms. Ross", smile, and greet me with a handshake. They comply with the rules of the classroom by having a seat and waiting for me to direct them to their appropriate learning stations. They are so excited about the art that they are learning about and creating. So far they have studied history of Western visual arts and are in the process of creating their own masterpieces. It gives me great joy to witness some of the students displays when they learn of their own talent. They all have a great desire to attend college when they graduate and are doing everything they can to.

My Project

I am requesting basic art supplies such as sketching pencils, colored pencils, paint, brushes, and multimedia paper. The resources I am requesting are going to allow my students to learn how to use different media to create their desired work of art. They have been learning about paint techniques via readings and images. If they had the materials, they would be able to apply what they learned to their own canvases.

This project is important because students who participate in a quality arts program benefit in several ways.

It develops their critical thinking skills, artistic abilities, self-confidence, social interaction, and their enthusiasm for arts and other core subject areas. Last and most important, students can explore, create, invent, all while learning and having fun.
