My Students

I teach 5th grade online during the pandemic. My students are brimming with curiosity and enthusiasm as they acquire knowledge through distance learning. English is the second language for my students, all of them low income, and all of them qualify for the free lunch program.

My students have limited resources, lacking the ability to purchase art materials to use at home for art lessons.

Art has been of great benefit to my students by building their self confidence, and learning to express themselves. I would like to give them the opportunity to do a wide range of art projects at home that extend beyond crayons, and markers.

My Project

I have requested oil pastels, tempera paint stick sets, and watercolor art paper. My class will explore the art of several well known artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian painter and art theorist, as they create abstract art, and Keith Allen Haring, an American artist whose pop art and graffiti-like work is fascinating to my students.

Art experiences boost critical thinking, teaching students to take the time to be more careful and thorough in how they observe the world.

The focus in instruction will be on color, layout, perspective, and balance as the students prepare for presenting their artwork to their peers and parents.
