Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Guidance Counselor at Bushwick Leaders' HS for Academic Excellence, a school established in 2003 on a premise to serve a community that is at risk to many issues such as, high poverty, illiteracy, teen pregnancy rate and HIV. We started with 121 9th graders and have grown to 471 students. Our students wear a dress code that ensures our business appropriate attire. We are currently trying to mold the future leaders of not just Bushwick, but the world. Bushwick Leaders HS for Academic has successfully graduated 74% of its student body which is comprised of 473 students on register. 85% of our total population receives free or reduced lunch. Our school is located in area where gentrification is making itself present. Our students deal with a lot of extenuating circumstances and do not always receive the necessary care they need. One such area that is continuously overlooked is their mental health. Our population of students witness way too much and not always given the necessary reinforcement or support needed to mentally deal with these situation. What I would like to start is an art therapy session where we can allow our students to share their feelings when their emotions can not be articulated verbally. Art is part of our instructional learning process, it is used as both educational and therapeutic. What I am proposing is that art supplies be provided to us so that we can continue this curricula. The supplies we would need are paint brushes, Acrylic paint, sketch pads and canvases. These would be incorporated into our individual and group session periods offered weekly and to any student needing time away from class to regroup.
