Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Viva la resistance! Our students will be engaged in a project to come away with a sense of power, with the feeling that they have transformed their own personal “narrative” through artistic expression. They will have heard and provided a space for community voices as well in a final gallery event.

My students are predominantly Latino-American and attend one of the largest public schools in an urban city.

They are in sixth grade and have been studying the history of Mexico and South Africa this year in social studies. They are bright, enthusiastic, and hard-working students who are curious about the world around them and aware of social justice issues in their community. They have been particularly interested in thinking of ways to fight against oppressive forces. We have discussed historical contexts of oppression, such as the Jim Crow era, apartheid in South Africa, and the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico. Our last unit of the year focuses on movements and ways of resistance or change. We will look at political and social methods of expressing our voices in response to injustice in the world.

My Project

In this unit, our students will be organizing and conducting a gallery event, which will include an exhibition of their mural, independent artwork, and an open mic. Our class will be creating a mural in conjunction with learning about the Mexican Muralist Movement. They will require large canvas and paint to vividly express the narrative of their community. Students will also explore printmaking as a way to spread their message to the "masses." Students will be using the E-Z Cut blocks and cutting tools to create their own print designs and make posters and fliers for the gallery event. The posters and fliers will include excerpts from their poetry collections. Students will find inspiration for their designs from traditional Mexican art.

This project is a way for students to find their voices when so often their voices are not heard.

They will develop an individual voice through their artwork and poetry, as well as a collective voice in their mural and through the gallery event itself. We hope students will learn that their thoughts and opinions matter, and that they can empower themselves and others through art.
