My Students

My students are bright eyed and ready to please! Over 90% of my students come to school with a primary language other than English. They are from immigrant families who receive free and reduced lunch status. Parents want them to do well in school but many struggle because they are learning to speak English or have other special learning needs. In spite of this, the children are happy to be in school and try their best.

Because of this, I want to do my best for them so that each one of them succeeds in school.

My work is not done until each child makes good progress and thrives in all subject areas throughout the school year.

My Project

In first grade students have writing workshop where they draft stories, edit, and then finally publish their work. Student work is always at different stages as some are better at writing and art while others struggle. Because of this, having storage bins and folders to organize student work -- and pencil boxes to organize writing and art supplies-- would be very helpful. Students need a space to put their writing and artwork drafts. Putting their writing and art work in folders inside of storage bins would make accessing their work much easier. Inside each storage bin would also be their spelling dictionary ... a book of words that students can refer to when writing. Often times, my students feel they can't continue writing because they are unable to spell.

All students enjoy the publishing stage as that is when all their hard work comes together and highlights their writing and art talent.

Students copy their work onto nice paper and then illustrate their pages. Sheet protectors will keep special artwork clean and neat. At the end of each writing unit, students enjoy each other's work during our publishing party. Being able to store their published books in bins will bring organization to our publishing parties and make accessing each other's books easier.
