Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a very focused, helpful and friendly bunch of teenagers. This being our 5th year as a new school, they have learned to adapt and be flexible. We are a small school housed in a huge building, with 5 other small schools in it.

If you ask our students for help with something, they drop everything to be of assistance.

They are hardworking and they deserve the very best from us. I would like to do whatever I can to enhance their learning.

My Project

I would love to bring Scholastic Art into the classroom, but there isn't enough in the budget. I am requesting thirty-four subscriptions to Scholastic Art magazine. The wonderful thing about these art magazines is that they will enhance and enrich my students' awareness of art. It will introduce contemporary art and artists, extra vocabulary and visual content that go hand-in-hand with what they are being taught in the classroom. With regular use of the magazines, the students' reading and writing skills will improve, which help them across all disciplines. Also, each issue comes with teacher resources, ideas for projects and lessons that can bring new life to my current lessons. I will be able to lead the class in discussions on articles and passages from the magazine (which is great, especially because we do not have a textbook to work from). My students will be able to see the artwork up close and in color which is fantastic because I have access only to black and white xerox copies of paintings. The possibilities are endless.

NYC's curriculum is aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards, which increase Literacy skills.

What better way to enhance and improve the student's reading and writing skills than with a classroom subscription to Scholastic Art Magazine? Donations towards this request will give a much-needed boost in my students' literary skills. It will introduce them to a world outside of school; one of art, diversity and culture, broadening their horizons.
