This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is about replenishing books in our K-8 center library. Two book collections, in particular. First, our atlases. Every morning, we stream announcements. (Morning Announcements! Take you back?) Monday - Thursday, we give clues about a mystery country. Each class in the school then guesses the country and on Friday, we reveal the answer and pick the name of the winning class from a hat. (The winning entrants get a big bag of candies.) So what does this have to do with replenishing our book collection? The kids want to check out atlases! We have nowhere near enough atlases to meet the demand. The atlases we have selected for this project are especially suitable for our children, many of whom are learning English as a second language: they have plain, brightly-colored maps, engaging pictures and easy vocabulary. The second book collection we'd like to invigorate = the most popular books in our library: the Dogman comic book series. The books that circulate most usually look the worst for wear. Some of our Dogman titles are falling apart and will have to be retired from the shelves soon. We'd love some replacements, please.

Approximately 85% of our students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch.

Many are first-generation Americans: their parents are recent immigrants from Central/South America and the Caribbean. The point is that our school does not have an affluent PTA that could purchase books for us—so we'd very much appreciate any help you could give us.
