Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 2nd,3rd and 4th grade students in a Special Ed classroom with students who have various learning and speech disabilities. The area my students live in is considered low socio-economic, and doesn't have the same opportunities as others may.

The students in my classroom are pretty amazing kids.

These students have the same goals and aspirations as their regular education peers, as well as the peers in neighboring suburbia. These kids have a lot more on their plate though, which in my mind makes them stronger. They should be given access to the same educational opportunities as students in wealthier districts. Unfortunately that is not the case, and due to budget cuts, many of our teachers myself included spend their own money to get supplies for their classrooms and students. Due to my students and their disabilities, they need a more hands on multi-sensory approach as well as continuous exposure to the world around them.

My Project

What good is learning how to spell a word or even read it if the students don't have an idea of the meaning or can not comprehend the example given. How do you teach a person born blind what the color blue looks like? Well, through learning about the world around us, students will be able to not only learn new vocabulary, but they will also be exposed to new ideas, and experiences to apply new vocabulary through meaning. All students not only in my classroom could benefit. My students could really benefit from newer technology, interactive lessons, subscriptions to educational Internet sites like national geographic, time for kids, scholastics, ipads (using speech to text), smart table, web cams (for live chats and online lessons), educational apps, as well as charts, visual aides, books etc.

The donations made will make learning so much more then "teaching to a test".

This is REAL WORLD learning at its best. During our "TRIP AROUND THE WORLD" I believe that these equally intelligent special education students can prove to the education system, just how much they can learn! I love to prove people wrong, and would love to show just how productive these kids can be and just how much they can contribute to the future. But they need your help to get started.
