Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I teach are as diverse as our school district and they come with such overwhelming curiosity it can be hard to contain our lessons to the classroom. Many of the students already speak two languages and love the idea of learning another. Some are heritage speakers of Spanish and appreciate a place to shine with their knowledge and fluency in a way they may not be able to in other classes. We are a small elementary school of roughly 220 students all of whom I get the privilege to work with on language acquisition.

My Project

Cooking tools and clean up supplies will help my students learn about the varied cuisine from the Spanish speaking world.

Students who can say, Pico con un cuchillo, while they pico/chop with a cuchillo/knife are using their whole body to encode vocabulary.

This experience is both engaging and empowering. Students learn life skills that can be applied at home: meal prep and clean up. Classes will experience ingredients, smells, and flavors unique to the Spanish speaking world.

Cooking with sufficient and proper tools will enrich and expand our learning potential.
