My Students

I teach a five course sequence that includes computer science, robotics, and electronics. Boys and girls from 9th to 12th grade are stimulated by the hands-on projects that involve electronics, motors, and 3D printers as well as writing code that supports those innovations.

The students pay it forward by sharing their projects and mentoring younger students in our elementary schools.

They also compete in science and STEM contests and enjoy sharing their projects at showcase events, open houses, and maker faires.

My Project

This project will allow students to extend their home energy-monitoring www.ProjectSmartpod.com and www.Watt.network projects and link students in different grades and courses enhancing their opportunities to collaborate.

The Seeeduino Cloud Starter Kit is a user-friendly smart home kit that even ninth graders will be able to implement how sensors can solve problems related to energy use and security.

The IEIK UNO R3 ATmega328P Arduino boards will allow them to sign out hardware and work at home.

The BeagleBone Black Starter kit is suitable for 10th grade AP Java students to use the Java to interface with the cloud-based output. Presently the curriculum doesn’t provide for hardware integration of their computer programs.

The Mega ADK R3 for Android board will tie our 11th grade Android programmers to the project as they contribute Android apps to interface with the web-based output.

The SunFounder Mega 2560 Starter Kit, Adafruit Motor add-on pack, Robotlinking 37-in-1 sensor kit, and Adafruit Motor/Stepper/Servo Shield provide enough sensors for exciting possibilities. For example, when someone exits a room, a light can be turned off. Or, an LCD can display the current temperature in a room. Motors will allow locks, lights, and blinds to be adjusted.

The CanaKit Raspberry Pi 3 will process the inputs from many Arduinos to create custom sensor status reports.

The Adafruit Ultimate GPS Logger Shield and Adafruit Ultimate GPS HAT allow the unit to be self-aware as to the location of the home. It will bring more depth to the project’s development.

The Adafruit WICED WiFi Feather board, Bluetooth/802.15.1 Development Tools for the Feather Bluefruit board, and Dragino All-in-one Yun Shield provide wireless Arduinos with different interfaces so students can manage compatibility and technical specs that are necessary developer skills.
