Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Build it and they will come." These students designed houses for their teachers using Revit (an industry leading architectural CAD software) and they are urging to build models of these homes.

These are students of a three year pathway named Design Technology.

They are hard working and very technically advanced that tend to achieve at a much greater rate when faced with challenging hands-on projects. The school that they attend is large and extremely diverse. It is supportive of the project-based learning method. This method has proven to be a real winner in my class.

My Project

The students have spent almost 5 weeks, interviewing, sketching, designing, revising, drafting, and presenting these homes. One of the examples I used during this project was a 1/4" = 1'-0" architectural model that was built for a previous client. They have asked many times if they are going to be able to build a model, and I have had to say, "We don't have the supplies." These students have the will and the know, but not the materials. I personally believe this will be a great hands-on project. A few of the students stated that they want to present these models as a gift to their "Client" (aka. their favorite teacher that they designed the house for). In this project, they will have to use high level skills with software and plotting devices, as well as strong math skills. Their models will also be shown to a local architect(s) who will give them critiques on their designs.

This project will be a great confidence booster for many of these students.

It will allow them to work on a great hands-on project that will result in the creation of a product that they can use for there senior and professional portfolios. The dream home project was extremely successful for my students and I think this will take it to the next level. Thanks!
